6.1.12
Welcome back!
We hope you had an excellent Christmas and wish you all the best for 2012.
After the success of last term with our Ofsted and Church inspections stating that we are now a `good' school with some `outstanding' features, we have a great base on which to build - and that is what we are going to do!
As always, we will keep you up to date with all news and events through our newsletters and texting service but please remember that you are more than welcome to come to school and discuss any issues or concerns that you have.
We are all looking forward to another exciting term.
Whole School Photograph
We will be taking a whole school photograph on Monday 16th January. Please make sure that your child(ren) are wearing the correct uniform on the day.
Meals
This term we are maintaining the cost of school meals at £2.05. If our numbers continue to rise as they have continued to do our aim would be to reduce the costs for everyone even further, making school dinners outstanding value for all. If your child doesn't have school dinners can I urge you to look through our menu and try a few them.
Remember - you can order on the day.
`Lucky Plate'
The `Lucky Plate' scheme was very successful last term and will therefore continue this term. If your child gets the `Lucky Plate' when having their school lunch, they will be able to choose 2 friends to take to the top table to share their lunch with as well as having their lunch FREE.
Friends of St. Catherine's
On Thursday 12th January at timeMinute30Hour142.30pm, the Friends of St. Catherine's will be holding their Annual General Meeting. The meeting is an open meeting for anyone to attend so if you have time, feel free to come along.
Family Learning
We are currently working very hard to develop some family learning opportunities in school. Parents who attended the courses last year commented on how good they were.
Our next course will be called `Helping Your Child with Literacy' and will be aimed at parents who have children in Years 1 and 2 (Stephenson and placeCityNewton classes). The course will run for 6 weeks on Tuesday mornings starting on January 24th. We will be sending out further information nearer the time for anyone who would be interested in taking part.
Greenhouse
In our last newsletter of 2011 we sent out an odd request to ask you to start collecting 2 litre plastic bottles over the Christmas holidays. We want to create a greenhouse made from bottles so that children can share in the design and make process as well as promoting recycling.
Uniform
It is very important that the children are wearing the correct school uniform in line with our uniform policy. Please support us in making this policy work and if there are any problems with uniform don't hesitate to contact us. Remember that PE kit is also part of that uniform policy including a change of footwear for PE.
Remember also, that we now have the new `USF' logo on some items of uniform and these can be purchased from the school office when needed.

September 16th 2011
Welcome back to the new school year.
I hope you all had a lovely summer holiday. The children have returned to school looking very smart and this is fantastic to see. Lots of new black shoes and smart new uniform is on display. Thank you for supporting our uniform policy.
Meals
This term we are maintaining the cost of school meals at £2.05 despite rises in other schools in placeDevon. If our numbers continue to rise as they have started to do this term, our aim would be to reduce the costs for everyone even further, making school dinners outstanding value for all. If your child doesn't have school dinners can I urge you to look through our menu and try a few days.
Remember - you can order on the day.
Note from the office - On the Tuesday in Week 3 of the menu it has been changed from lentil loaf to vegetarian sausages.
`Lucky Plate'
We are going to launch a `Lucky Plate' competition in October which will run for 3 weeks up to half term. The basic idea is that one plate for Key Stage 1 and one plate for Key Stage 2 will be marked with a star and should your child get the `Lucky Plate' then they will receive some reward. A separate letter will come with further details but remember you have to be in it to win it so check out the menu and encourage your child to have school lunches!
Harvest Celebration - 26th September 2011
This year, our harvest celebration will be taking place on Monday 26th September beginning at 2.45pm. You are invited to come along and share in the assembly with us. We will not be collecting food donations.
Houses
One change for this year will be the reduction of houses in school. Last year we had 5 houses but this year we have reduced this to 4. They will still be named after local Tors. The house that has disappeared is `Hound Tor'. All of the children who were in `Hound Tor' have been relocated in the other houses. The reason for this is so that it will be easier to organise joint events with St. Michael's Primary as part of the United Schools Federation (USF). We will keep you updated with events as they happen.
Behaviour Policy
Our behaviour policy will be exactly the same as last year. The policy proved very successful across the whole school providing consistency for all children. It is based on positive reinforcement of good behaviours and the children respond very well to this approach. If anyone would like to see a copy of our policy please feel free to ask at the office or see your child's teacher.
Homework
Please encourage your child to complete their homework on time. Your support with homework is also warmly welcomed as it helps you to keep track of what they are learning about in class.
We also want to have a big focus on home reading. Your child has a reading diary and we will be asking you to read every day with your child and to record it in their diary so that we can see the progress they are making at home. As with anything, the more practise they get, the better they will become and the more enjoyment they will get from reading!
Help us to help them!
Healthy School
Another big focus for us as a school will be promoting healthy lifestyles and healthy eating. We will be doing this through a variety of events and topics in class, as well as asking you to promote healthy eating, especially in packed lunches. More details will follow at a later date.
Jump Rope
Last year the children took part in a British Heart Foundation Jump Rope activity to raise money to support the charity. We have now received a certificate for our contribution of £324.10. Thank you to everyone who took part and contributed towards this fantastic total.
Snack
A snack is a brilliant way to keep children's energy levels up. At playtimes your child may bring with them a healthy snack, (a piece of fruit for example), but NO SWEETS.
If you would prefer, we are going to start a system of providing toast for children at playtime. Toast will be 10p a slice and will be available every morning playtime. Children will need to have a named purse or wallet for their money please.
To start with we will limit children to one piece per day but as the system develops and improves we may be able to offer more.
Attendance
Good attendance is vital and we would like to encourage you to make sure that your child attends school every day unless they are too poorly for school.
Clubs
We have an exciting range of clubs starting this term. The teachers give up their own time to run these clubs and we would ask you to encourage your children to show commitment to the club by turning up every week. If there is a reason that your child will be unable to attend a club one day, please let the office or the teacher know so that we don't waste time checking where absent children are. Thank you for supporting us on this.
Clubs will start in week beginning - 26.9.11.
NHS Devon
In line with the national policy, BCG vaccination for TB is not routinely given to children in schools since 2005. NHS Devon are now screening young people in reception year, who are at risk of developing or have ongoing risk of exposure to TB infection.
This includes any child aged 5-18 years old who has not been vaccinated against TB infection and:
have a parent or grandparent born in a country with a high incidence of TB or
were born or lived for more than 3 months in any country with a high incidence of TB.
Please contact The Immunisation Team on 01392 208469 or 01392 208470 to arrange screening and vaccination.
Scootering and Cycling
It's good to see some children cycling and scootering to school. Please take the time to remind your child(ren) about the importance of scootering safely, especially along the busy roads. Can I also request that if children wish to scooter to school they must wear a helmet as they do when they cycle.
Could we also remind you that cycling and scootering on the playground is not allowed before school and at the end of the day purely for health and safety reasons. Thank you.
Cycling News
22nd September is `Devon Car Free Day' - why not plan on using your bike on that day.
For families who enjoy a cycle in the local area there is a new section of the Exe Estuary Trail open to the public at Cockwood.
Permission Booklets
Please return this to the office as soon as possible. Thank you!
Uniform News
Swimming Shorts
When we go swimming this year we will be asking boys to wear proper swimming trunks / shorts and not the long surf shorts that a lot of children wore last year. Long shorts actually hold more water and get in the way of learning the strokes properly.
Uniform - USF
You may remember that we had a competition to design the new USF logo for the Federation with St. Michael's. This badge is now on the school minibuses and will soon be on the school signs. We are having some new samples of uniform made up which will be on display in school when they arrive. We will then begin selling the new uniform from the school office as before. We will also be offering school fleeces and coats with the school logo and USF logo on them. For prices, please ask at the office.
WE WILL NOT EXPECT YOU TO BUY NEW UNIFORM AS WE UNDERSTAND THAT MANY OF YOU HAVE JUST DONE THAT OVER THE SUMMER. IT WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR WHEN YOU NEED IT.
School Grounds
This term, you will continue to see developments in the school environment. This will include the fencing project around the new pond, which is taking shape very well. We will be encouraging classes to use the outside learning environment as well as getting children to help look after their classroom gardens.

Secondary School Transfer
For all children in Year 6, now is the time to start thinking about where you would like them to go next September when they start secondary school.
The Local Authority Admissions Team has an online service to make the process much easier and this opened on the 1st September and closes on the 31st October. Last year, over 95% of families used the online system.
All parents of Year 6 children will soon receive a letter from the Admissions Team with a UID number, although this is not essential to apply.
Please make sure that you do apply as the admissions team cannot keep places in reserve, nor can they consider late applications where schools are oversubscribed.
School Photos
We had the school photographer in school this week. Although I know many of you like the new style of photo, I have been made aware by some parents that the new style isn't to everyone's liking. We have contacted the photographer about this and she has offered to come back to school on Wednesday 28th September between 8.30am and 9.30am to take a more traditional picture for those people who would prefer that.
If you would like to have your child's photo taken again on the 28th September please see Mrs. Heathman or Mrs. Williams in the school office.
Shoe Box Appeal - Operation Christmas Child
The school has run the Shoe Box Appeal over the last few years. The idea is to create a Christmas gift in a shoe box for a disadvantaged child somewhere around the world. The school is happy to collect any boxes that you may wish to prepare or alternatively, you can deliver the boxes to the local collection point which is Millmans Grey Cars in Heathfield, (6/7 Dane Heath Business Park on Wentworth Road).
To ensure that boxes get to their destination in time for Christmas they need to be at the depot by the 14th November.
For details of what you can put in the boxes and information about the charity visit
www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk/
... and finally
Please remember that we appreciate all of your comments, ideas and partnership. Education is about working partnerships for the benefit of the children in school so please don't hesitate to contact us if you have something to discuss or a concern that we can hep with.
