RAINBOW & RED CLASSES
CHILDREN'S HOSPICE SOUTH WEST
A fortnight ago the children in nursery and reception classes wore Wellington boots for the day and did many splashy activities and tasks which needed boots!  A huge thank you from the Children's Hospice South West as these two classes raised £82-35.  Well done.

THE ROLE OF THE SCHOOL GOVERNOR
Our school has a Governing Body of twelve governors who give up many hours voluntarily to oversee, question, advise and generally support the headteacher (and school) at many levels.  At the moment we have one vacancy for a Foundation Parent Governor and if you would like more information on this position please have a word with Father Richard.  The governors of the school ultimately have the final say on decisions regarding the school and are a valuable, and necessary, part of the partnership between children, parents and staff.

BUDGETING FOR SCHOOL OUTINGS
We have received a request for advance notice of termly costs e.g. trips, swimming etc. to help with the household budget.
Each September we send out our proposed diary for the year which includes a note of those outings/activities of which we have prior knowledge.  However, curriculum trips/visits are often organised at much shorter notice.

In order to help budgeting costs would it help parents to pay a termly subscription towards forthcoming outings?  I would welcome your views and if sufficient parents are interested we will make further investigations.  Some schools ask parents for a termly fee, up front, and then ask for further payments as and when necessary.

Please let me know what you think.

QUESTIONNAIRES
Thank you to everyone who has already returned the questionnaire.  These will be taken very seriously and if you would still like to return your form with comments please do so before half term.

Have a look at our new menu (issued earlier in the week) - you don't need to buy a meal every day - booking in advance is helpful but not obligatory. Please hang on to your menu leaflet as this lasts for the term.
However! Some clever parents have noticed that the larger print menu advertised on the office door also has an additional choice. We will be adding this to the menu for the summer term (starting next week) and a revised menu is attached e.g. Thursday Week 1 shows “turkey wrap with salad garnish” - look out for this again week beginning 12th May!
JACKET POTATOES WILL ALSO BE AVAILABLE (until the end of July)

COMMUNITY MESSAGING SERVICE
1. Recently within the Teignbridge area there have been a number of burglaries where access has been gained through the front door of the property. In each case where this has happened the front door was only protected by a night latch (sometimes referred to as a 'Yale lock'). It is a minimum standard of security that if the last point of exit from the home is a wooden door, then it should be fitted with a five lever mortice lock that meets British Standard 3621, or a lock of an equivalent standard. If you have any concerns about any aspect of your home security then please contact your local Crime Prevention Officer (Brian Graham) on 01626 215158.
2. This message relates to Police Log No. 579 14th April 2008. Police would like to remind residents in the Devon area to be aware of phone scams that appear to be doing the rounds. This involves an automated call relating to a loophole in the law with regards to debt. The call goes on for a while and then asks you to `press 5' for more details. As with many scams pressing `5' will probably connect you to a highly priced line for information, which is likely to be untrue. Please remember never to give out personal details and should you receive a call like this just end the call by putting the phone down right away. If you have any queries then please contact us on the General Enquiries Number 08452 777 444 quoting CMS and Police Log No. 579 14th April 2008.

3. Once again false information has been circulated recently via emails and other media, including the Television Channel Fox TV, with regards to a way of alerting police when being forced to remove funds from a bank account by a mugger or similar criminal.
This information informs you that when you're at the cash point if you type your pin number in reverse i.e. instead of 1234 you type 4321 the cash point will still allow money to be dispensed but will alert the Police that there is something wrong. Police would like to advise that this information is incorrect. ATM machines are not linked to the Police and this false information could confuse people into thinking that this is a safe way to contact the police when in a similar situation.
4. This message relates to Police Log No. 912 16th April. Police are receiving reports relating to bogus utility officials, particularly the Water Board, being present in the area. However this is not just limited to the Water Board this can include the Council and Electrical suppliers as well as handymen or rogue traders. Please remember that all official workman for utility companies do carry ID on them and will be happy for you to check their identity with the company before you let them into your home especially if you are not expecting anyone to call. With some companies you can even set up passwords that all workman need to quote so that you can be sure that they are who they say they are. Please check with your local supplier to see if this can be set up.
If you have information for any of the above please contact the Police on the General Enquiries Number 08452 777 444 or in an Emergency call 999.

Gill Murch

Dear Resident
Firstly I would like to introduce myself to you; I am Jonathan Sims your Police Community Support officer for Heathfield, Liverton, Ilsington and the surrounding areas.
I am a member of Heathfield/Moretonhampstead Neighbourhood Policing Team; the team members are PS 5440 Ian Stevens PC 6122 Phil Wilcox PCSO 30425 Carl Thomas, PCSO 30382 Paul Wilson and PCSO 30384 Jonathan Sims.
I have been in post since finishing my training in June 2007, this means that you have both a Police officer and a Police Community support officer covering your neighbourhood.
You may have heard people talking about PACT; PACT stands for Partners and Communities together. The idea behind this is to find out what the residents and communities actually feel about the area they live in. What worries them within the area? How they feel it could be improved. Over 500 surveys have been completed over the last few months and the three main concerns were
1.Improved Youth Facilities
2.Anti Social Behaviour
3.Speeding Vehicles
We will be holding a series of meetings now to discuss these concerns with people who can help make a difference, these include yourselves and our partner agencies, I shall keep you updated on how things go over the coming months.
Self Defence Classes for Women
We are in the process of organising a series of classes for women; this would be run one day a week over six weeks in a local venue. If you are interested, please contact myself or Phil at Chudleigh.
If you are taking a trip up on to the open moor over the spring and summer may I remind you not to leave valuables in your vehicles; there have been a spate of thefts from vehicles on the moor.
Best Wishes
Jonathan Sims and Phil Wilcox
