Dear Parents,
The governors share your delight in knowing that the SATS results are very good. KS1 - best results for the past six years. KS2 - better than the past two years for Maths and the past three years for English. Well done!
Thanks to Miss Murch, the staff, and to you the parents for all the support you have given your children to make this result possible. And more good news could be on the horizon as indications are that our SATS results next year are tipped to be even better. Not only have we turned the corner but we appear to be zooming up the home straight. Well done everybody.
The Governors.
HEATREE RESIDENTIAL TRIP
It was lovely to see so many parents at the Heatree Information Meeting this week.
A reminder that children in next term's Year Groups 4, 5 and 6 will have the opportunity to visit Heatree Activity Centre in November for three days.
Our current Year 6's had a wonderful time raft building, abseiling, climbing and experiencing many exciting activities they would not normally have the opportunity to explore.
More information will be available closer to the time but parents may start to put money away for the trip NOW. The cost will be approximately £110 and any parents who would like to start paying by instalments may do so immediately. A £25 deposit WILL be required in September.
SWIMMING MONEY
Please help us by paying up for all swimming sessions before the end of next week. We still have several children who have not paid for swimming, and some who are missing a few payments. The school already makes a loss on these sessions and your help in covering these costs would be greatly appreciated.

If you have not yet checked your Data Collection Sheet (sent out with your child's report) please do so and update any change of address or telephone numbers and return before Thursday. This message relates to Police Log No. 629 of dateYear2010Day1Month71st July 2010. For those of you who have a computer. The police have received a report of a cold caller phoning a householder advising that she needed to take urgent action or her computer would crash. The caller asked her to switch on the computer and talked her through various options. She ended up giving her credit card details and being charged. This is a scam, please do not follow their advice to 'fix' the problem as they could have remote access to your computer and you might end up having to take your PC to a computer repair shop to get it reformatted. Please be wary of such callers, do not give personal information. Any legitimate company will understand your refusal.
If necessary please phone the police with any information on 08452 777 444.

Dear Parents,
SUMMER FETE
It has been some time since we have had such warm weather for our Summer Fete. Last Saturday our Friends Committee, parents and friends worked tirelessly to stage this event for all of us to enjoy and we would like to thank them sincerely.
In particular there are always a small number of people who work hours and hours to ensure the best possible result and this year we would especially like to thank Sarah Fowler, Lisa Burns and Julie Richardson.
The fantastic news is that the Friends committee have raised approximately £1,300 from the fete and this money, as always, will be used for the benefit of our children.
OUTDOOR PLAY EQUIPMENT
The children are aware that the outdoor play equipment is “out of bounds” before and after school as, during these times, children are not supervised by school staff. However, should you allow your child to play on the equipment while you are dropping or collecting please be aware that their safety is your responsibility.
SAINSBURY VOUCHERS
We have counted 4,612 Sainsbury vouchers and have ordered the following items:-
1 pack of World Balls
1 Safe Ball set
1 pack of coloured tug of war ropes
1,094 vouchers have been “banked” for next year.
As always, our grateful thanks to everyone who collects vouchers - please pass this on to all family and friends who, we know, collect on our behalf.
YELLOW CLASS ASSEMBLY
Parents of children in Yellow Class are invited to join us next Friday, 9th July, for school assembly at 3-00 p.m. The children would love to share this with you.
NSPCC
This week we had another visit from Mr. Charlie Francis from the NSPCC who had previously talked to the children about the work of his charity. As you know the children were invited to help other children by raising vital funds to support the work of the NSPCC which includes the confidential telephone helpline service for children CHILDLINE. Many parents will already know that a staggering amount of money was raised for this charity and this has now increased to £778 which is phenomenal. We, and the NSPCC, have been overwhelmed by the support - THANK YOU VERY MUCH INDEED.

Next week the library will be open for the older children in Violet and Blue Classes to return their library books to Mrs Kilminster. No further books will be issued this term.

Dear Parents,
TALENT SHOW
Well done to all our performers who were absolutely fantastic and thank you to everyone who supported the event - we made nearly £120 profit last Friday which will go towards our new school fundraising account. As many of you will already know, the governors are responsible for paying 10% of the new school building costs. We are slowly repaying this debt and so far have managed just over £1,000 per annum from hire of the school premises and fundraising.
ST. CATHERINE'S ADVENTURE TRAIL
We are delighted with our new adventure trail and the two playground shelters. They are now finished and will be officially “opened” at the Summer Fair next Saturday by members of the FRIENDS committee and the School Council.
Many thanks again to everyone who contributed to the cost of the trail and to the FRIENDS past and present who have worked so tirelessly to achieve this.
FOUNDATION UNIT & ORANGE CLASS
Well done to those eagle eyed parents who noticed that we have double-booked the parents visit on Thursday 24th June.

Bovey Tracey and Moretonhampstead Neighbourhood Report - May 2010
The local team have been busy following up on reported issues that have affected the Neighbourhood over the past month. We have seen a fall in recorded crime from April, 52 down from 60, which is a pleasing start to the new year (crime figure speaking).
A series of overnight burglaries were reported in the Moretonhampstead area on the night of 25th of April. The burglaries were to out buildings and although garden machinery was targeted other items were also taken. Residents in rural areas are requested to review their security arrangements. In the majority of cases padlocks were either cut or broken open and had more robust padlocks been in place it is very unlikely that the offenders would not have gained access. Residents are also requested to report any suspicious activity or vehicles seen in rural locations.
It is highly likely that the targeted properties were visited prior to the offences. In these recent cases the indication is that once the property has been stolen the thieves will inspect it close by leaving the area with `selected' items. The stuff that they don't want is then left abandoned.
Remember, if it seems suspicious it probably is, you are not wasting our time by reporting it.
A number of incidents of Anti Social Behaviour have been reported in Bullands Field Bovey Tracey and addressStreetOliver Place in Heathfield. Residents are urged to continue to report these incidents so offenders can be identified and dealt with.
The issues at addressStreetOliver Place are one of our current Community Priorities. PCSO Tina Jordan is working on this to identify those involved and will be sharing information with the local housing association.
As a result of the PACT survey In the Moretonhamstead area at the end of March a number of residents raised the issue of off road motor bikes using bridal paths and private land. An operation has been planned for the end of May to address this issue. This is another one of our Community Priorities. If you have also been affected by this issue could you please contact the Neighbourhood Team at Chudleigh Police Station with details of times and locations.
The Neighbourhood Team assisted in the Lustleigh May Day Parade, keeping an eye on the traffic so that the day and parade passed off safely. PC Rachel Prescott ran a successful Horses Tack Marking Day at placePlaceNameMole PlaceTypeValley in Heathfield. This was supported by the placeDevon and Cornwall Horse Watch Scheme which looks to provide crime prevention advice to anyone across the counties who have horses. The day was successful and if you wish to be included, or would like further information you can contact her at Chudleigh Police Station.

RESIDENTIAL VISIT TO HEATREE IN NOVEMBER 2010 FOR CHILDREN IN
YEARS 4, 5 & 6
Another reminder about our residential trip to Heatree in November.
There is nothing quite like a residential visit for building strong relationships between children and their teachers. For this reason our next residential visit is planned for the Autumn Term when the children move up a year and we have already booked places for those who will be in Years 4, 5 and 6 to go to the Heatree Activity Centre. We didn't want our Year 6 children to miss out, so they will be going next month, so do ask them about it when they get back.
Activities will include a selection of the following - team quest, high ropes, orienteering, archery, climbing tower, abseiling, raft building, moorland walking, kayaking and canoeing.
Put a note on your calendar that this is due to take place on the 17th, 18th and 19th November.
Early warning again that there is a charge, and if you are keen to put something aside during the next six months you may like to know that the charge for this June is £115 each - we will not know the exact fee for November 2010 until nearer the time but you can expect something similar. Any parents who would like to start paying the school now may do so and will be given a Payment Record Card.

Dear Parents,
ROAD SAFETY
This is the first item in the newsletter this week because we are very concerned about the safety of our children. We have received reports from drivers of children “popping” out from between parked cars or driveways without looking for cars!
Please help us keep all our children safe by talking to them at home about the dangers of vehicles! Very young children riding scooters and bicycles should always stay on the pavement and be supervised by an adult.
PARENTS' MEETING WITH GOVERNORS
A reminder that you are cordially invited to join the Governing Body and staff at an information meeting on Thursday 20th May at 6-45 p.m. We would like to share some of the highlights of the last year with you and by this time we will also know a little more about the plans for the future of the school in September.

8-55 a.m. every day next week ready for the prompt test starting time.
CHILDREN - ICT & E SAFETY
The children in Key Stage 2 have all taken part in an assembly about E-Safety, warning them of the dangers when using the internet and discussing how to keep safe. A leaflet about this is attached for you to look at and your child(ren) may want to talk about any issues raised.
We are doing a follow-up assembly next week and the children are bringing home an A4 sheet of paper to make a poster telling everyone in school how to keep safe on the Internet - the leaflet will help them with this. There will be a small prize for the best three posters and the posters will be laminated and used in all the places around the school where we have internet access.

Thank you to all the parents who have already paid for swimming at Newton Abbot Leisure Centre. Please help us by paying either weekly or £22 in advance for the whole term. The children love to have time in the pool and it is a wonderful opportunity for them.
If your child would like to wear swimming goggles in the pool we MUST have a written letter of authority from you.
FRIENDS OF ST. CATHERINE'S SCHOOL
Just a short note to ONCE AGAIN thank all the Friends Committee for all their hard work in fundraising for the school.
In addition to the play equipment mentioned in last week's newsletter, the Friends have also recently covered the electrical costs of installing a brand-new kiln! You may recall that this kiln was purchased via a grant and we are looking forward to using it very soon!

RESIDENTIAL VISIT TO HEATREE IN SEPTEMBER 2010 CHILDREN IN YEARS 4,5 & 6
There is nothing quite like a residential visit for building strong relationships between children and their teachers. For this reason our next residential visit is planned for the Autumn Term when the children move up a year and we have already booked places for those who will be in Years 4, 5 and 6 to go to the Heatree Activity Centre. We didn't want our Year 6 children to miss out, so they are going later this term, so do ask them about it when they get back. Activities will include a selection of the following - team quest, high ropes, orienteering, archery, climbing tower, abseiling, raft building, moorland walking, kayaking and canoeing.
Put a note on your calendar that this is due to take place on the 17th, 18th and 19th November.
Of course, there is a charge, and if you are keen to put something aside during the next six months you may like to know that the charge for this June is £115 each - we will not know the exact fee for November 2010 until nearer the time but you can expect something similar.
TRAIDCRAFT - FAIRTRADE DAY
We have received a certificate of thanks from Traidcraft to thank you all for your generous support on Fairtrade Day last term. It is in the folder in the foyer - please come and have a look!
SCHOOL WEBSITE
We are in the process of updating our website with some lovely photographs of the children. If you have any objection to your child's photograph being used for this purpose please let us know in writing by Wednesday 5th May. Parents who have already ticked the relevant box in the Permission Booklet advising the school that they do not wish photographs to appear in newspapers/publications/television etc need not write again.
SATS TESTS
Year 6 SATS take place during the week beginning 10th May - we would ask parents to ensure that the children are not late for school that week - tests start immediately.
A reminder to the parents of Year 2 children that these SATS are not taking place during the first weeks of May - they begin on May 17th and will take two weeks for all tasks to be completed.
SCHOOL MEALS
We have been delighted with the meals received from placePlaceNameSouth PlaceNameDartmoor PlaceTypeCommunity College. They have been tasty, fresh and very popular. We appreciate that it is rather a nuisance to order one week in advance but everyone is getting familiar with the new system and it is working well.
A new menu is attached for the week commencing Monday 10th May and please ensure that any orders are received on Tuesday 4th May (our first day back after May Day).
Over the past fortnight we have been reminding our usual customers that they must return an order form.
A little word of warning that in future weeks children who are entitled to free school meals who have not returned their preferred choices will receive the main course and main pudding of the day - therefore if your child would prefer something different please let us know by the first day of the school week (usually Mondays) - thank you.
A reminder that this menu will run for the next three weeks. Many children like the same thing every week and if your child receives free school meals you may like to just return one form for the three week period clearly marking that it is for the next three weeks.
SNACKS
KS2 children will be able to purchase a healthy snack from Tuesday of next week - the cost will be 40p or less (dried fruits, fresh fruit, traybake and biscuits).
[The younger children have fruit provided].
BICYCLES AND SCOOTERS
For the safety of both children and adults please remember that no bicycles or scooters should be brought into the school playground. Toddlers should park them in the cycle rack and continue into the playground on foot.
BOOK CLUB
With last week's newsletter you would have received a Scholastic leaflet advertising the sale of many wonderful books. If you would like to order books from this leaflet please complete and return with your cheque payable to Scholastic Ltd by Friday 7th May. Thank you. The school will receive a small commission on any sales.
TALENT SHOW - FRIDAY 11TH JUNE
Application forms for this year's Talent Show are now available from the school office. All performers welcome.
Children will be divided into two age groups - KS1 (Red, placeCityOrange and Yellow Classes) and KS2 (Green, Blue and Violet Classes). If a family or group of children would like to perform together from across the age-range then they will be entered into the oldest participant's appropriate Key Stage.
THANK YOU
I would like to thank all the parents and friends of the school for the lovely presents, cards and letters that I received at the end of term. St. Catherine's has always been an important part of my life and I value the support you have given me and the friendships I have made.
Mrs Anne Long.
NEW SHELTERS
They are really great and the children love them - but a word of warning … if you have toddlers or small children please do not let them stand on the seats in the shelters as it is possible that they could fall between the wooden slats and hurt themselves. We have warned all the children in school and told them just to sit on the benches but we would ask you to enforce this when your children are in your care and keep a close eye on the little ones in particular.
CLUBS
Please find an up to date list of our clubs overleaf. We have had a couple of amendments recently so this is a reminder - still places at Tag Rugby and Football Club -ask at the school office for a permission letter.
The new Cookery Club will start on Tuesday 11th May and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Parents will be asked for an initial payment of £2 to cover the cost of ingredients for the half-term.

BOVEY TRACEY AREA, COMMUNITY POLICE REPORT
Moretonhampstead
The good news for Moretonhampstead is the level of recorded crime has dropped dramatically over the last month with reported crimes down from 21 to 3.
A number of Moretonhampstead residents have been able to assist the Neighbourhood Team in enquires which led to 2 men being arrested and questioned regarding a number of offences, including Burglary and Theft, that occurred between December and February. They are currently on police bail pending further enquiries. If you have any information regarding any offences committed during this period please contact the Neighbourhood Team at Chudleigh Police Station or if you want to report a crime anonymously call Crime stoppers on 0800 555111.
The Neighbourhood Team and Partnership Agencies will be holding a PACT Day in Moretonhampstead on dateMonth3Day27Year2010the 27th of March 2010. We will be carrying out door to door surveying of residents in Moretonhampstead and outlying villages to address any policing concerns you may have. The Team will be based in The White Hart Hotel between timeHour10Minute010:00 am and timeHour16Minute04:00 pm. Please feel free to drop in if you have any issues you wish to raise.
Heathfield / BOVEY TRACEY
Levels of crime in the area remain low with the number of recorded crimes down from 29 to 21 on the previous month.
One incident which gave concern was the vandalism to the War Memorial in addressStreetFore Street, Bovey Tracey. CCTV images of a group of males who were in the area at the time of the incident were released to the press by Bovey Tracey Town Council. As a result of this, several members of the public have come forward and identified members of that group. It is anticipated that that the named individuals will be helping police with their enquiries shortly. If you were a member of that group or have any information regarding this incident please contact the Neighbourhood Team at Chudleigh Police Station.
Reports of Anti Social Behaviour in Heathfield have remained low. The Neighbourhood Team, supported by other uniformed colleagues, are conducting dedicated foot and vehicle patrols of the area during the evenings to ensure this remains so.
LIVERTON
Speeding has been highlighted by residents as a cause of concern. We have been out with the children of placePlaceNameBlackpool PlaceTypePrimary School stopping and talking to speeding motorists and we have further speed checks involving Motorcycle Officers, Probationary Police Officers and the Neighbourhood Team planned for the coming months.
SHEEP WORRYING
The lambing season is upon us. It is the responsibility of all dog owners, whether they live rurally or are simply visiting the countryside for a walk, to keep their pets under control at all times and on a close lead when walking anywhere near livestock.
Even the most faithful and loving family pet can turn into a killer when away from its owner's control and confronted by a flock of sheep. The danger is greatly increased when two or more dogs get together and the pack hunting instinct takes over.
In the main, dog owners in our area take their responsibilities seriously. However some people still mistakenly think that the dogs are only playing. If ewes are worried at this time of year they can abort their lambs. Dog owners may view their pet chasing sheep as a minor incident - but it has major consequences for animal welfare and farmers' livelihoods. Dogs caught by farmers worrying their sheep are liable to be shot, though they are reluctant to do this except as a last resort. The dog owners could be liable to prosecution and heavy costs. If a dog worries livestock, the dog owner or the person responsible for the animal at the time is guilty of an offence under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953 and may additionally be sued for compensation by the farmer.
If you need to contact the neighbourhood team for any reason you can do so as follows:

SCHOOL LEADERSHIP FROM SEPTEMBER 2010
Please rest assured that although it has only been three school weeks since we received Ms Murch's exciting news, the governors have already started to investigate all the choices available to them from September.
No decisions will be made until we have all the information available but parents will be kept informed at the earliest opportunity.
SWIMMING
The children in KS2 (Violet, Blue and Green Classes) will again be swimming on Tuesday afternoons at Newton Abbot Leisure Centre, starting next Tuesday, 27th April until the end of the summer term.
As with previous years the school will have to make a charge for these swimming sessions at the bargain price of £2-00 per week. Your child will be in a small group of approximately eight children.
Please have a look in cupboards to turn out swimming trunks and costumes so that we are organised for the start of the new school term. Remember bathing costumes and towels need to be marked with your child's name and please make sure that your child has a coat as some afternoons in May can still be very cold, especially after just getting out of the pool!
CLUBS
TUESDAYS
Multi Skills Club will be on MONDAYS from next week, Monday 26th April.
WEDNESDAYS
Because we now have Dance Club and Tag Rugby Club on Wednesday evenings, BIBLE CLUB HAS MOVED TO THURSDAYS, STARTING NEXT THURSDAY, 29TH APRIL.
PLAYGROUND SHELTERS
You have probably seen the beautiful playground shelters which are being specially built for us at the edge of the playground. These should be finished early next week and form the first part of a project to improve our school grounds. Shortly after half term we hope to begin the second part which will consist of an adventure trail to go between the two shelters. The children have been involved, through the School Council, in choosing the items for the trail and we are very grateful to FRIENDS for fundraising to make this possible. It is something we have had in mind for a long time now and it is great to see the buildings actually going up. Once finished, they will provide shade for the children during hot sunny days, a place for parents to shelter from the rain at the start and end of the day, as well as outside classrooms for a range of activities during the school day.
CHILDREN LINING UP TO RETURN TO CLASS
We have received requests from parents to try a different system so from Monday, we will be getting the children to line up at the start of the day and at the end of break-times. They have practised this already so should know what to do on Monday morning. There will be two bells rung - the first as a signal to stand still and the second to get the children to walk to their lines. If you are in the playground perhaps you could help your child to get to grips with this?
ARE YOU RECEIVING FREE SCHOOL MEALS?
Any child receiving free school meals may now have entitlement to many other benefits, including funding for out of school activities.

I am delighted to let you know that Mrs Long will be back with us straight after the Easter break - she will be helping out doing additional one-to-one work with some of the children. This is excellent news and although we have given her a HUGE send-off today we will be giving her a most welcome return again in April.
We have a very experienced lady in Blue Class for the next term called Mrs Penny Fitch. Many of the children have already met her as she has already spent some time both in the classroom and getting to know the children. It is delightful that we are able to keep both of these ladies for the next few weeks!
SCHOOL LUNCHES
A reminder that we will only be able to serve school meals to those parents who have already ordered for the first week of the new Summer Term. From this point onwards all meal orders must be received and paid for ONE WEEK IN ADVANCE. The menu attached today must be returned with your circled order and payment on Tuesday 20th April (the first day of term) for the week beginning dateYear2010Day26Month426th April 2010.
This is a new and exciting venture for us and thank you to all those parents who have already signed up for the first week after half term.
REV. IAN HELLYER
We were delighted to welcome the Rev. Ian Hellyer to deliver our school Eurcharist today. He will become a new member of our Governing Body and we wish him all the very best in his new placeCitySt. John's Parish.
SWIMMING
The children in KS2 (Violet, Blue and Green Classes) will again be swimming on Tuesday afternoons at Newton Abbot Leisure Centre, starting after the Easter holidays (27th April) until the end of the summer term.
As with previous years the school will have to make a charge for these swimming sessions at the bargain price of £2-00 per week. This is excellent value as swimming lessons normally cost £4-50+ per session - not including transport costs.
Finally … parental help with supervising the coach travel and changing rooms would be appreciated - do we have any brave dads who would be able to help supervise the boys changing rooms and encourage the children to get dressed quickly? As with all our volunteers a CRB (police) check will need to be completed, but we can help with this!
LIBRARY
The library will be open for Orange Class on Tuesday morning, Yellow Class on Wednesday morning and Red Class on Thursday morning after the Easter Holidays.
WANTED!
Our Foundation Stage teachers would appreciate a few donations of:-
Crates
Guttering
Garden tools
If you can help please pop these items into school at the start of the next term. Thank you.
ATTENDANCE
A letter is attached concerning attendance. Please be aware that the very same letter is being sent out to parents from all the schools in our Local Learning Community and the wording is not ours, although the principles will be followed at this school.

Dear Parents,
AN ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE CHAIR OF GOVERNORS
I would like to share some good news and some not so good. First the good news - the governors have received a letter from Miss Murch who has informed us that she is to be married in early September this year. We are absolutely delighted for her and wish her and her future husband all the very best.
The not so good news is that Miss Murch will be moving to Oxfordshire where her fiancé is based, so she will be leaving St. Catherine's at the end of the summer term.
The governing body would like to thank her for all her hard work and commitment over the past two and a half years, and to assure you that they will be working very hard themselves over the coming weeks and months to ensure that the future education for your children and the school it self is in the best possible hands.

We look forward to seeing you.

Dear Parents,
PROGRESS
In spite of rumours which we have been told are circulating at the moment, we would like to make it absolutely clear that the school is NOT in any type of Ofsted category - nor has there been any suggestion that it should be. Following our successful inspection in July 2009 we have continued to make progress and to work with the Local Authority to raise standards and we will continue to do so. If anyone has any questions relating to this, or can tell us where these rumours originate, please feel free to make an appointment to do so.

It is with great pleasure I can advise you that the children in Green, Blue and Violet Classes have been practising JACK AND THE BEANSTALK and will be sharing this with you shortly. More details will follow and your child will bring home a letter explaining the costumes.
BEHAVIOUR
During our assemblies this term we are introducing the children to the values on which our school Mission Statement is based. This week's theme has been “Respect” and we have emphasized how important it is to treat each other fairly and politely.
However, there have been a number of incidents over the past few days which do not reflect these values and which have shown a distinct lack of respect for pupils and staff.
The police have told us that there are anti-social issues in the community and in the last few days they seem to have been spilling over into school. Whatever the cause, we will not tolerate bad behaviour and disrespect to our staff and, if it occurs, we will deal with it appropriately. Please see the attached sheet for more information and, as parents, we would ask you to also stand firm and back any decisions made by the school. We need to work together to give the children the same message and would ask for your co-operation.
LITERACY & MATHS AT KEY STAGE 2
During the next few weeks we will be making some changes to the way we group our pupils for their Literacy and Maths at KS2. These changes will enable us to focus specifically on providing support for each child by placing them in groups of similar need. The teachers have put a lot of thought into the planning of the groups to try and maximise the learning opportunities for each child. We also intend to use the particular expertise of the teachers to accelerate the children's learning. Mrs Long will therefore be teaching Literacy every morning in Blue Class and Mrs Seymour will be teaching Maths in Green Class. Mrs Handford will be working with the Year 6 pupils in Violet Class in preparation for their SATS.
During the week commencing February 8th we will introduce these groups, so that they are up and running after half term and the children will be familiar with the new routine. Meanwhile, if you have any queries or concerns about these new arrangements please come and speak to me or your child's class teacher.
LIBRARY
Next week the library will be open for Orange Class on Tuesday morning, Yellow Class on Wednesday morning and Red Class on Thursday morning. A reminder that the children in Red Class may bring home a library book, which should be exchanged after a fortnight. Book bags are available to purchase via the school office at only £2-80 each.

PLAYRANGERS - Thursdays, after school
TEPEE (Teignbridge Play Network) have been running the Playranger project in Heathfield for the last 8 months, and we have been successful in bringing children together for outdoor play. We would like to remind parents that Playrangers is an open access session which means that children aged 5-16 years will not be prevented from leaving the park and can come and go as they please. Playrangers is not the same as out-of-schools care clubs where children are kept until they are collected. Parents are responsible for the safety and wellbeing of their children, by ensuring the level of independence or supervision that is necessary for their own child, in accordance with the child's age and level of understanding. This could include ensuring the child knows how to contact their parent or carer. Playrangers do carry mobile phones so there is access to a phone in the case of an emergency. Playrangers are trained to allow children to develop their own ideas of what to do and how to play, they will intervene to prevent harm, but cannot manage every aspect of every child's behaviour. Some minor misdemeanours may go unchallenged as children need to learn to behave reasonably together and for themselves. We welcome parents or carers attending the play sessions, and this is essential if your child is under the age of 8.
If you have any comments or concerns, please contact TEPEE direct on 01364 644470.

“MESSY CHURCH”
The following is a message from Rev. Kevin Hooke the Methodist Minister in Bovey Tracey:-
We are hoping to start “placePlaceNameMessy PlaceTypeChurch” once a month at St. Catherine's Primary & Nursery School, Heathfield, after Easter.
What is “placePlaceNameMessy PlaceTypeChurch”? It's a more fun and family way of being church - at each session there will be crafts and activities on the theme of the day, a short informal act of worship, and a meal together. It's a church for adults and children together - not a club or activity just for children. It's also building on the success of the Harvest and Christmas services held through the school in recent times. We're very grateful to the governors of the school for allowing us to try this out. We're aiming to have “placePlaceNameMessy PlaceTypeChurch” from 4-00 - 6-00 p.m. on the 3rd Sunday of the month.
However, in order for it to work we will need both children and parents/grandparents to come along, and also a team of helpers.
Would you be willing to help?
We need people in areas of:
Helping to run the crafts
Setting up and putting away
Catering &/or serving meals
Administration - signing people in as they arrive etc.
Playing an instrument
Publicity
Praying
Some training may be required for some of these tasks (eg food handling for caterers) and regular helpers need to be CRB checked. Can you help?
If so, please contact Rev. Kevin Hooke (Methodist Minister in Bovey Tracey) on kevin.hooke@methodist.org.uk" kevin.hooke@methodist.org.uk or via the school.
Many thanks.
Kevin.

We have 42 children at present whose parents have not confirmed whether they have allergies, medical conditions, how they travel to and from school and whether they may be photographed for school purposes.
Within the next few months we will be updating our school website and will be posting photographs of exciting events which have taken place in and around the school including our class achievements. Unfortunately, if you have not completed this permission booklet your child's picture will not be included.
So do ask for another copy if you have mislaid your form as it would be a shame if your child's photograph was missed out.

Next Tuesday, 1st December, will be the last Living Word lunchtime library session before the Christmas break. If your child has a Living Word library book please ensure this is returned next week.
SCHOOL GATES
A polite reminder that, for the safety of the children and adults, please do not drive through into the school parking and roundabout area. This is reserved for taxis, buses and staff parking only.
Please remember that children and parents should access the school through the pedestrian left hand gate (looking at the school), walk around the car-parking area and wait in the school playground. Access through the right hand pedestrian gate will be available at 8-55 a.m. making a circular journey for parents dropping children off. We do know that occasionally this has not always worked out quite as we would hope but we are constantly looking at improvements and if you have any suggestions please make a note of them and pass through to the school office for consideration.

A message to you all from a concerned parent:-
Apparently there is a new car-jacking scam taking place around the country and this is what has happened to others …
You look into your rear view mirror to back out of your space and notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window. So, of course, you jump out of your car to remove it - this is when the carjackers appear out of no-where, steal your car with your personal items inside, including your handbag or wallet giving them your home address and possibly bank details and money!
Therefore, a word of warning! If you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window, lock your doors and just drive away and remove the paper later.

6th November 2009
Dear Parents,
Welcome back and firstly we have some excellent news:
PINK FRIDAY
Thank you to everyone who helped us to raise £294.30 for breast cancer on the last day before half term. What an absolutely fantastic turn out in pink and well done to all the children! There were photographs and reports in the Mid Devon Advertiser and Herald Express which we hope you have seen. After suggestions from several dads we thought we would like to do Blue Friday next year on behalf of prostate cancer care - we do hope you will feel able to support us again.
CLUBS WITH MISS CLEAVE
(NEXT WEEK)
Please note that Miss Cleave will be unable to take clubs after school next week. Therefore, Dance Club on Wednesday 11th is cancelled and Performing Arts Club on Friday 13th is also cancelled for one week only.
Recorder Club on Thursday 12th will be taken by Mrs Norris.
CHILDREN IN NEED
As you know, national Children in Need takes place on Friday 20th November and we are very aware that you have already been very generous in supporting our Pink Day. However, we are going to participate in Children in Need activities and we would like all the children (and adults) to come to school in their pyjamas or night-clothes and bring along a favourite bedtime story to share with other children! (We would suggest you pencil their name inside the book in order that we can identify the owner - we may have one or two identical books!) If you would like to donate a few pennies this would be very welcome (but not expected).
Unfortunately, this year everything has come at once and the FRIENDS are already getting ready for our Christmas Fair so, as usual, we will be holding a mufti day to support this. The date for this is the 27th November. Please give what you can.
LIBRARY
Next week the library will be open for business for Orange Class on Tuesday morning, Yellow Class on Wednesday morning and Red Class on Thursday morning.
MEASURING AND WEIGHING CHILDREN
IN YEARS 6 & RECEPTION
If your child is in Reception or Year 6 you should have received a letter yesterday regarding "measuring the height and weight of children". If you have not received your letter please ask for a copy from the school office. This routine data information is anonymous and confidential but you may opt out by completing and returning the appropriate slip to the school office.
END OF SCHOOL ARRANGEMENTS
We have experienced a few problems at the end of the day during this term and, in an attempt to ensure greater security for your children, we will be making the following changes. All the children in Orange and Yellow classes will be led into the playground by the person who has been teaching them and they will wait in the playground in a group until you come and collect them from their teacher.
Older children will come out of their classes in the usual way, as will the children in the Foundation Stage Unit.
If you have any further suggestions or comments to make about the arrangements at the start or end of the school day, please speak to us about them or drop a note into the school office.
FRIDAY 13TH NOVEMBER - RECEPTION CLASS ASSEMBLY
May we invite parents of children in our reception class to join Mrs Norris and the school for a Foundation Stage Unit Assembly at 3-05 p.m. next Friday, 13th November?
(Due to the part time hours of the nursery age children they will not take an active part in the assembly this time).
WANTED IN THE FOUNDATION UNIT
Mrs Norris and Miss Holloway would be grateful for the following donations, but please speak to them first so that we don't have too many of the same items.
Large tyres (e.g. tractor tyres)
Boxes - wooden/plastic crates
Large materials
Dressing up clothes
Unwanted outside play equipment

Each week the volunteer will work alongside qualified Play Rangers to gain experience and have some fun along the way. Activities include environmental play, sports, face painting and much more!

Dear Parents,
HARVEST FESTIVAL
Thank you so much to everyone who supported our lovely harvest celebration last Sunday. It was a great success and the children were, as usual, absolute stars! The collection for Farm Africa made £42-28 - thank you.
YEAR 6 RESIDENTIAL VISIT
Parents of children in Year 6 will have received a letter this week concerning the residential trip organised for next summer.
We would like to advise other parents that next summer the trip is only open to Year 6 children because we are planning to change the time of our residential trips to the Autumn Term in future and we did not want the present Year 6 pupils to miss out! A similar trip for the new Years 4, 5 and 6 is already being planned for November 2010.
PERMISSION BOOKLETS
If you have not already returned your Permission Booklet please pop this into the school office on Monday.
DRESSING UP CLOTHES
The children LOVE dressing up during playtimes but we are short of dressing up items (especially for boys). If you have any old fun clothes to donate please could you leave them with the school office? Old net curtains make wonderful fairy outfits for the girls!
LIBRARY
On Monday next week we will be receiving our library book exchange! This is good news meaning that the children will have new books to choose from the following week. However, because Mrs Kilminster will need some several hours to receive these books there will be no library for Orange and Red Classes next week.
CHRISTMAS SHOE BOX APPEAL
This Christmas the school will once again be supporting the Samaritan's Purse Christmas Shoebox appeal. The Samaritan's distribute shoe boxes full of goodies to war torn countries enabling the children in these areas to have at least one parcel during the festive period.
Anyone interested in contributing may like to be on the look-out for suitable items - perhaps toy boxes are going to be sorted before Christmas - any scarves, toys, pens etc (in good condition) can be included.
If you would like to participate in this appeal you can either cover and fill your own shoe box and label it "boy" or "girl" or you can bring in individual items and leave at the collection point by the office. We will then make up as many boxes as possible and send them from St. Catherine's. Items needed include toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, flannels, pens, pencils, paper, small toys (not battery operated), balls hats, gloves, scarves (basically if it will fit into a shoebox [not liquid or food items] it will probably be O.K.)
If you have any shoeboxes at home which you can donate we would be very grateful.
We are also after a volunteer to help organise, wrap and put together the Christmas shoe-boxes. If you have an hour or two to spare now and again please let Mrs Heathman know.
PINK DAY - NEXT FRIDAY
The school will be holding a Pink Friday to raise money for Breast cancer care on 23rd October. Children are invited to pay £1 to wear something pink to school and there will be prizes for the best dressed in each class. At 3-o-clock their will be a pink fete in the hall featuring a pink raffle with all pink prizes - top prize is a fantastic pink cake! There will also be teas, coffees and pink cakes on sale along with face painting, biscuit decorating and of course the chance to see lots of photos from the day. Parents attending the fete may collect their children from class at 3-o-clock.
We are also having a colouring competition again this year and your child should be bringing the picture home with them tonight. Please make sure their name and class are filled in before they are returned to school. Tickets for the pink raffle will be on sale at 10p each in school and in the playground at the end of each day from Monday 19th.
Any donations of pink cakes or biscuits to sell at the fete will be very gratefully received.
Performing arts club is cancelled next Friday so you can all come to the fete!

This week our newest governor, Mr. Russell Terry, would like to share some background information with you and his report is given below:-
Hello,
My name is Russell Terry and I am the new parent governor. I have lived locally for 25 years and for the last six years I have been living in Heathfield.
I have a daughter who is in Year 1 and also have a son who will be joining the nursery in January.
I believe I have joined at a great time with the school getting a good Ofsted report. I will ensure that I will do my bit to make St. Catherine's School the best in the area.
As I work full time, I am not at school as often as I would wish. However, when I am in the playground please do not hesitate to approach me.
Thank you.
CLUBS
After School Clubs are being reviewed and we will let you know the choices available to the children as soon as possible.
FOOTBALL CLUB - SATURDAYS
With much regret Mr. Moyle will be unable to run the Saturday morning football club for the next few months. Hopefully, if circumstances change, he would like to re-start again in the spring, but we will keep you informed. A HUGE THANK YOU TO MR. MOYLE for the support and training he has done for the children in his spare time.
GUITAR TUITION
There are now some spaces for guitar tuition (on Thursday afternoons after school). The cost is £4 per fifteen minute individual session, payable in advance for the half term.
HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME
Last week we reminded parents about holidays:-
Additional holidays are not encouraged but if necessary we may authorise up to ten days per year. For those of you who may be thinking of booking your holiday for next year please remember that we cannot sanction holidays during SATS week, which will commence May 10th next year for Key Stage 2 and the week commencing 3rd May for KS1.
In addition it is so important to consider very carefully before thinking of taking holidays for the first two weeks of a new term (especially in September when children need to renew friendships with their classmates, become familiar with their new class routines and teachers. All this is much harder to accomplish once the class are settled. For this reason we would request that you do not ask for holidays at the beginning of a new school term.
PHOTOGRAPHS
A reminder that individual photographs will be taken on Wednesday. Please make sure your child arrives in a school sweatshirt. Younger brothers and sisters are welcome to come along first thing (from 8-30 a.m.) to have individual or family photographs taken.
DATA COLLECTION SHEETS & HOME SCHOOL AGREEMENTS
If you have any amendments to your data collection sheet (handed out last July) please may we have this as soon as possible? The red copy of your Home School Agreement should also now be returned to school.
“FRIENDS” COMMUNITY OUTING
Wonderful news - advance notice that once again this year the Friends committee will be organising a trip to BRIDGWATER CARNIVAL. Further details will follow shortly, but if you are interested you may like to leave your name at the school office. Tickets will be available on a “first come, first served basis”.
COMMUNITY NEWS
BOVEY TRACEY TOWN COUNCIL have asked for our help in reminding parents and neighbours that this year they are taking part in a Yellow Pages recycling competition. If you have not already disposed of your Yellow Pages, please place the directory in your black recycling box but first pull off the top cover and drop it into school! Bovey Tracey Town Council could win £2,000 worth of tree planting for the Heathfield area if we collect enough!
SHINE TV - SMALL MINDED - UKTV
Small Minded is a new guessing game show for the UKTV channel WATCH. Every week celebrities and comedians are teamed with a child and have to guess what's going on when the children paint, draw and act out their challenge. UKTV are holding auditions in placeCityExeter over the next few weeks for what should be a really fun and exciting experience for children. If children are successful the filming will take place at weekends and during half term.

4th September 2009
Dear Parents,
Welcome back to school. I do hope you all enjoyed the summer - it is great to see all the children back in school and we are looking forward to an exciting Autumn Term.
This term we welcome back Mrs Norris and have a new regular supply teacher on the team - Mr. Powell.
RE-ELECTION OF PARENT GOVERNOR
Our initial good news is that we have been able to twist Mr. Williams' arm to stand as Parent Governor again for another four years. You may remember that we asked for nominations the last two weeks of term and as Mr. Williams was the only brave candidate we are delighted to appoint him.
As always with the first newsletter, may we start with a few polite reminders:-
NO FIZZY DRINKS/CHOCOLATE
Another reminder not to put fizzy drinks or chocolate in packed lunch boxes. If your child has a dessert or yoghurt please pop a teaspoon into their lunch-box as well. All Key Stage Two children should bring a piece of fresh fruit for morning break - the younger children will receive fruit most days but it would be helpful if you could provide fruit for the first day of each new term. Alternatively a healthy snack may be purchased from the school kitchen.
PLEASE ONLY PUT WATER IN YOUR CHILD'S CLASS WATER BOTTLE.
PLEASE LABEL SCHOOL CLOTHES
With the start of a new term, may we remind parents to label all school clothes, especially sweatshirts. REMEMBER - USE A PERMANENT MARKER AS BIRO WASHES OUT.
PARKING
Please help us, and our neighbours, by thinking about where you park when dropping and collecting children. For new parents - the school gates are kept closed for safety - do not drive into the school grounds or use the roundabout. Our neighbours have been advised to call the police should anyone obstruct a driveway so please be warned! It is also important to leave the roadway clear for emergency vehicles and it is sensible to park cars on ONE SIDE OF THE ROAD ONLY.
All schools have congestion problems; therefore, please do all you can to ease the situation - even better if you live within walking distance leave the car at home.
GUITAR TUITION
There are now some spaces for guitar tuition (on Thursday afternoons after school) - please let Mrs Heathman know immediately if you are interested in learning the guitar. For those who have been learning guitar over the last few terms the next lessons will start on Thursday 10th September.
FREE SCHOOL MEALS
A reminder that if you receive the following benefits your child may be entitled to receive a Free School Meal:-
Income Support and Income Based Jobseekers Allowance
or Guaranteed Element Pension Credit
or Child Tax Credit and DO NOT RECEIVE ANY WORKING TAX CREDIT.
If you think that your child is entitled to a free meal but you have not yet applied please pop into the school office and ask for an application form.
ABSENCES
Lots of reminders in today's newsletter - if your child needs a day away from school don't forget to ask for a Holiday Form. Additional holidays are not encouraged but if necessary we may authorise up to ten days per year. And for those of you who may be thinking of booking your holiday for next year please remember that we cannot sanction holidays during SATS week, which will be commencing May 10th next year for Key Stage 2 and the week commencing 3rd May for KS1. IF YOUR CHILD IS UNWELL IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU LET THE SCHOOL KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE EITHER BY TELEPHONE OR LETTER.
YEAR 6 CHILDREN
If your child is in Year 6 this year you will need to know that the Admissions Team have been busily preparing for the next admissions round, and the online application facility for pupils transferring to secondary school will be open from 1st September until 16th October 2009.
This does seem to be very early but you need to think about where you wish your child to go in September 2010 and apply as soon as possible. Parents can also use the Parent Information Point in the school office reception area to view admission information. Please be aware that if you miss the deadline you may not get the school of your choice - just because you live in the placeSouth Dartmoor catchment area your child will not automatically be transferred there - YOU NEED TO APPLY BEFORE 16TH OCTOBER.
PHOTOGRAPHS
Advance warning that all children will have individual photographs taken on Wednesday 16th September. Please make sure your child arrives in a school sweatshirt. (If you want to give your child a brush or comb please do so). Younger brothers and sisters are welcome to come along first thing (from 8-30 a.m.) to have individual or family photographs taken. These will be ready well before Christmas.

Dear Parents,

NURSERY CLASS - SEPTEMBER 2009
As many parents will know free nursery education is being increased from September 2009 and it is now possible to receive 15 hours of paid time at the school's nursery with effect from September.
If you know of working parents who currently pay for their child to go to a nursery elsewhere it may be worth sharing this information with them as it is also possible to top-up the time spent in school by paying for the additional hours. Please ask Miss Holloway, Ms Murch or Mrs Heathman for further details.
Children who are expected to start in September will already have received information concerning this increased service and may we remind you that nursery pupils will start on Monday 7th September, not Thursday 3rd September as originally advertised. He will be taking time off during the school summer holidays and, therefore; the last Football Club will be the tournament on Saturday 25th July. There will be no Fooball Club during the school holidays and we will remind you in September about a starting date.

COMMUNITY YOUTH BUS
Most parents will know that there is a Youth Bus on Tuesday evenings for the youths in the area. Unfortunately this bus is being used by children who are too young! We have been asked to remind parents that children aged 3 - 7 should not be left with the organisers. Increasing numbers of very young children are arriving on the bus on a Tuesday night while parents are at the Heathfield Arms. The organisers have asked us to mention that whilst they enjoy building relationships with children and young people, they are not responsible for the children, and parents must be aware that they are not a childcare facility.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the school, not only over the last week but also over the last twelve months. The official HMI Ofsted report should be with us before the end of term and we will share this with you all as soon as it is in our hands. In the meantime many parents have kindly asked how our Ofsted Inspection went but unfortunately we are unable to tell you very much until the report is received. Rest assured we will let you know as soon as possible!
TALENT SHOW
A huge “thank you” to all the children who took part in last Friday's Talent Show. We all enjoyed it enormously and I know that the parents and friends who supported the event had a great evening as well!

In the meantime WELL DONE to our winners, Jourdan, Megan, Katie and Jess and to all the artists - Maddie, Courtney, Grace, Bethany, Leila, Lauren, Meghann, Charlie, Danielle, Bethany W, Alisha, Chloe, Shannon, Summer, Tom, Gena and Keane.
NURSERY SPORTS DAY
What a fantastic Rainbow Sports Day we had on Wednesday. Thank you to all the parents who joined us for both the sports and the class activities. Our school kitchen did a roaring trade with cream teas and strawberries and cream - let's keep our fingers crossed for Monday afternoon and hope we have another successful event! “FRIENDS” OF ST. CATHERINE'S
Our “Friends” committee are a small band of hard-working ladies who have organised many events over the past year for the benefit of our children e.g. end of term discos, bingo evenings and of course the forthcoming Summer Fayre.
Mrs Westbury has done a marvellous job over the last few years organising the “Friends” and we thank her enormously. She will now be standing down as Chairperson of the committee and we are urgently seeking new members to keep the “Friends” running.
Perhaps there is a group of two or three friends who have time to spare? Mrs Westbury will be happy to guide you and pass on helpful information.
With two or three parents willing to share the burden this can be a very rewarding job, however, there is no doubt that without a Chairperson steering the committee we will no longer be in a position to organise all the lovely events enjoyed by our children. Can you help?
Don't forget that our SUMMER FAYRE is only eight days away. We now need all the draw books (and money) returned to school. Donations of raffle prizes and cuddly toys would be very welcome.
Don't forget there will be children's competitions!
Please find a paper plate attached to today's newsletter. Your help would be appreciated in filling this with either a home-made or shop bought cake. Return it to us next Friday, with your name on the back, and you will be entered into a draw for a FREE FAMILY SWIM.
