Dorothy Nellie Langstead.
Born :- December 1924. Died :- January 2008.
Relations of Dorothy Langstead, in Australia, would like to find out any information on Dorothy by any of her friends, as in sections of letters to me, as below. If you can remember anything at all, or have photos of Dorothy, please let me, or Susan know. Thank you.

The photo shows Dorothy being given a gift, by Fr. David Stanton, in 2001, on her retirement from her position of Sacristan for over 20 years.

Hello Les,
please let me introduce myself, my name is Susan Loxton and I am related to the late Dorothy Nellie Langstead.
Dorothy was the daughter of my Mother's aunt, Nellie was her name and she was the sister of my mum's mother Betsy both Nellie and Betsy were born in Brighton.
I had a hard time trying to find Aunt Nellie's birth certificate , but found it in the end (long story why) but in that process I ordered a certificate for a Dorothy N Langstead and this is how I found out that Aunt Nellie had a child.
Then I found on the Internet that Dorothy died on the 6th Jan. 2008, which made me very sad as I could have met her if I started doing the ancestry years earlier.
After a few e-mails to Dorothy's solicitors in Devon they finally told me last night (28th October 2010), that she was a great supporter of your church, among other things. What I wanted to know was her friend’s names, because I wanted to learn all about Dorothy and to see some photos of her.
The solicitors also told me that Dorothy said that she didn't have any family, this is another reason why I would like to talk to Dorothy's friends because I want to know whether she ever met her mother, it makes me very sad to think that she died thinking she had no family.
Anyway I won't go on any further Les, but can you put me in contact with any of her close friends that knew Dorothy, I found out from Lealands housing that she lived there for some 25yrs so she must have had a few good friends.
(Webmasters note.
Barbara Mugford has already written to Susan (by snail mail) and Susan told me she will be writing back, on or about wednesday 1st december 2010..)
So if you can help me there it would make me so happy it's taken me 9 months to finally get some answers on Dorothy.
I've booked our trip leaving Australia on 17th May, arriving London 18th, we will be in London for about a week meeting our Dad's lost relatives, then down to Brighton for about the same time then hiring the car making our way up to Bovey Tracy, I've done a rough itinerary so far, we should be there between the 3rd and the 7th June, or there about’s, so hope everyone will be around, so looking forward to meeting you all at some point.
Kind Regards.
Susan.

We all remember Dorothy Langstead who very generously bequeathed the Residue of her last Will and Testament for the good of Saint John's. A considerable sum in excess of £37,000.
The Sacristy kitchen was renovated using some of those funds and a very great pleasure it is to use the kitchen.
We hope that we can arrange to meet the family as they have requested. It will be very good if some of the `old and bold' who knew her for many years could be available to meet the family.
A firm date has now been given, they will be arriving on Friday 3rd June and leaving on Sunday 5th June, and I know that you will all do your best to meet the family, particularly as we are to arrange at that time for a small memorial plaque in memory of Dorothy to be fixed to a wall in the Sacristy kitchen when the family visits.
The above attached letter explains the background and why Dorothy thought she did not have any family.
Please, when the time comes, do your best.
Roy Goble.

At 10am on the 4th of June 2011, I was waiting outside Wickham Hall, to meet Susan and Jenny, just talking to Fr. Ivor Halliwell, when our guests arrived.
We went into the hall, and I introduced Susan and Jenny to every one who had come to meet them, about 10 of us to start with.
After talking to everone, we took Susan & Jenny over to the church, and took some photos of the Plaque that was to be installed in the new kitchen. It was nice to hear Organ music as we walked in, as Margaret Steele was having her practice for the Sunday service.
After, a while a couple more Friends of Dorothy's came in to church, Barbara and I were ready to leave by then and said our goodbyes and headed home.
On Sunday they met up with Phil & Ross, Luckham-Bulmer, who drove them to Two Bridges, on Dartmoor, and showed them where Dorothy's ashes were scattered, just behind the Cherrybrook Hotel.

On the 13th September, I had a E mail from Susan, thanking us for the good time they both had with us. I have taken the relevant parts, and have put them below.

I keep thinking about all those lovely friends of Dorothy’s who made the journey to Wickham Hall to meet Jenny and I, it was a very moving morning for us both, a big thankyou to you, Les, for spending your valuable time organising the meet and to Barbara and Douglas Mugford and Roy Goble, Churchwarden, who we had a big chat to afterwards.
The church is so beautiful and I can understand why Dorothy spent so much time there, along with her friends, I still wish that I could have met her.
A big thankyou again to everyone for making the journey to Wickham Hall, we had a lovely time, and just loved Dartmoor.
Until next time, we may pass through there again in the next couple of years.
